Cherry News
An informative news sheet produced on a monthly basis for the residents of the village.
At the beginning of the 1970s it was suggested by the Parish Council that there should be a village newsletter. Up until that time the Church had produced a Parish leaflet, so a sub-committee was set up to discuss the matter with the resident Vicar, Rev John Thorold. It was decided that a newsletter would be issued as a joint project. The Church would arrange the distribution (free to every household ), and the Parish Council would publish news items of village interest. The cost would be covered by the Parish Council, with extra income generated from advertisements and donations. The original Editor wsa Jerry Bowman, assisted by Val Wright, who then took on the editorship for many years.
When Val retired, Keith Deeley volunteered to take on the Editorship of the Village Newsletter, the ‘Cherry News’. A committee was formed by Keith, Mike Cutler, Hazel Larcombe, and Sue Bolland, which agreed to adopt an A5 booklet format including some colour pages. Advertising revenue grew and the publication became financially independent of the Parish Council, allowing the Committee to award grants to local Village organisations from the profits.
The printing of the Cherry News moved to the Pelican Trust, an organisation working to support the employment of disabled adults.
After six years of dedicated service as Editor, Keith retired and in 2015 Victoria Di Maro took on the Editorial role, supported by the newly formed Cherry News Group committee, for the next four years. After Victoria’s resignation and whilst looking for a new editor, Jennifer, the Parish Church administrator, undertook the task of maintaining the publication in an electronic form when our printers were not working due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The distribution of the Cherry News to an increasing number of homes in the ever-expanding village, was ably managed by Janet Chapman, followed by Sue Morrison, and an army of volunteers.
Today
The current editor is Jean Trahearn, who took over in September 2020.
CW News is delivered free of charge, by a team of volunteers to every house in the village. Distribution is usually the last Saturday in the month. There is currently no edition in January and August.
News regarding local organisations and residents' announcements are put in free of charge. Items from nearby villages are put in at the Editor's discretion.
The newsletter is in A5 booklet form and the adverts scaled accordingly. Advertisements are available for 1/8 ,1/4, 1/2 or a whole page. Advertisers should note that the adverts are mainly in black and white but certain slots are available in colour, and that they should be presented in the correct size. Help may be given by the Editor in the creation of basic adverts which can be agreed between the two parties. Details of charges are available from the Editor.
Items for publication should be sent to the Editor by the Copy Date (if in an envelope - clearly marked C.W. News). Items are also accepted by e-mail.
